Roadrunners Score Important Win on Pink Zone Night
February 12, 2010 Deptford, NJ
The massive snowstorm that hit the east coast last week could not stop the women's basketball team from getting hot. They scored two key Region XIX wins on Friday and Saturday that put them in good position to secure a berth in the Region XIX Tournament that will begin Tuesday February 23rd.
On Friday Roadrunners participated in the WBCA Pink Zone initiative, a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The team raised money by selling soft pretzels to students and faculty during the day. At the game, fans were encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness. Fans could also make $1 donations to sign a banner in support of breast cancer awareness or in memory of a loved one who was affected by breast cancer.
The Roadrunners are proud to be one of more than 1,250 schools and organizations taking part in the effort to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State head women’s basketball coach and founding member of the WBCA passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease.
The game itself was one of the team's most exciting as they went head to head with Middlesex CC. Both teams started the game "on the bubble" for a tournament berth so both played very hard. GCC's freshman shooting guard Alex Koutras led the way with a season-high 31 points that included 13 field goals, 5 of them from beyond the 3-point arc. Another freshman sharpshooter, Devan Solari contributed another four 3-pointers to help the team to get back to the .500 mark for the season at 12-12.
Less than 24 hours later, the Roadrunners were back on the court for a showdown with the Bulldogs from Bergen CC. In this game it was sophomore point guard Tasia Farmer who led the way. Her pinpoint passes, leadership, and 19 points highlighted all the things she has done here for the Roadrunners the last two seasons. Both Farmer and fellow sophomore Cynthia Williams were honored at halftime as this would mark their last home contest for GCC.
The Roadrunners string of games will continue as they play at Atlantic CC on Monday and travel to Sussex CC on Tuesday to finish the regular season.
