The Gloucester County College cross country teams wrapped up their seasons this past weekend at the NJCAA National Championships held at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, NY. The roadrunners faced their stiffest competition of the season, the toughest hills of the season and continued to fight through the some sickness and injuries. Despite these battles, there were many good performances at the meet.
In the women’s race, the GCC roadrunners paced themselves at the start and then worked their way up through the pack the entire race. Leading the charge was Amanda Dole (Clearview). With an absolutely amazing finish, she passed a huge pack of runners in the final half mile to earn All-American by finishing 7th in the nation. Following closely behind, and running her best race of the season, was Tracy Dobkowski (West Deptford). Tracy surged up the final hill on the course and sprinted to GCC’s second All-American of the day with her 14th place finish. The next two lady roadrunners worked together for the entire race, pushing each other to strong finishes. Carly Wroblewski (Triton) and Erin Smith (Delsea) finished in 86th and 87th. Completing the scoring for the ladies, with a fantastic fighting finish of her own, was Sam Moyer (West Deptford) in 99th place. As a team, the women placed 12th.
In the men’s race, the same strategy of working up through the pack worked well. Alec Connelly (Paul VI) blazed down the final stretch to earn an All-American on the men’s side with his 13th place finish. Behind him was the Region 19 and Northeast District champion, Andre Thompson (Winslow Twp.), who was challenged by the hills and placed 26th. Kevin Walsh (Clearview) was recovering from illness as he flew by competitors in the last ¼ mile to finish 53rd. Rob Griffith (Triton) ran an amazing race with an irritated knee to finish in 61st place. Following close behind, with one of his best races of the season, was Greg Taylor (Sterling) in 69th place. The final two runners for the team were Anthony Higareda (Haddon Twp.) and John Doughten (West Deptford) finishing in 85th and 100th place respectively. As a team, the men finished 7th in the nation.
