The first in a series of articles on the history of athletics at GCC.

Larry “Pretty Boy Sharpe” Weil has spent a lot of time on the mat, some of his most memorable at Gloucester County College.

Weil, GCC’s first undefeated regular season wrestler, competed on the College’s beginning wrestling teams under legendary coach Chuck Williamson. During his stint at GCC, the Paulsboro High School grad was a two-time All Garden State Athletic Conference first team performer and completed the 1968 season undefeated. In his sophomore season, he ranked fourth in the National Junior College Athletic Association national polls.

“It was a great time passing through Gloucester County College. It helped me to ease into Trenton State (now the College of New Jersey),” recalled Weil, who wrestled on Trenton’s undefeated 1970-71 team which was inducted into the New Jersey College Hall of Fame.

In 1974, Weil turned professional joining the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) under the auspices of Vince McMahon Sr. Wrestling under the name “Pretty Boy” Larry Sharpe, he traveled throughout the United States and world earning the titles of North American Tag Team Champion, International Tag Team Champion, Mid-Pacific Heavyweight Champion and Canadian-American Heavyweight Champion. Weil went into semi-retirement from pro wrestling in 1983, teaming with “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers to open The Monster Factory, a professional wrestling school. He continued to wrestle part time with the WWF until officially retiring in August 1991.

Today, Weil works as a full-time starter ranger at the Pitman Golf Course and remains one of Gloucester County’s most well-known personalities. He recently signed a deal with ECW Press for his new book, “Road Scholars.”

“I’m proud of my time at GCC,” said Weil. “You can’t get a better education for the money, in my opinion.”
