Secondary school districts must develop a strong advisory board that will advise, assist, and provide support and advocacy in the development of a quality CTE program of study (POS). Advisory boards provide the vehicle to improve communication and interaction between all levels of education, and the outside world.
Advisory boards include representatives from business and industry, economic and workforce development agencies, teachers and faculty, administrators, and counselors from secondary and postsecondary institutions, and students and parents. Active involvement of these major stakeholders can afford great potential if they are fully engaged in the process; recognized for their expertise and knowledgeable input; committed to the process and ongoing change; and recognize that the ultimate goal of education is to serve students. Advisory boards that include these partners infuse external real-world input into internal processes that are essential for promoting and sustaining CTE programs of study.
Advisory boards should meet, at a minimum, twice during the school year.
Advisory Board Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of the advisory board include, but are not limited to, providing advice relating to:
- Developing a CTE POS mission statement and goals;
- Advising teachers
on ways in which they can develop curricula that integrates college and career readiness standards (refer to Curricula Development);
- Developing assessment and evaluation tools;
- Providing resources for the developing and sustaining the POS;
- Identifying professional development opportunities and/or in-service training that can be offered to counselors, teachers, and administrators
(refer to Professional Development to Foster Teaching and Learning Strategies for examples);
- Developing a plan to support and sustain the POS;
- Identifying other major stakeholders who should participate on the advisory board;
- Determine, if it is necessary, to delegate responsibilities of the advisory board among subcommittees who will report back to the advisory board (e.g., curricula committee, staff development committee, evaluation committee, etc.).
