Deptford Twp. – The Gloucester County College women’s tennis team wrapped up the fall 2013 season with a perfect 13-0 record during a 9-0 shutout match against Northampton Community College on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The lady Roadrunners are now poised to defend their National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIX and NJCAA Division III National Championship titles. Guiding the team are five returning sophomores, including captains Terra McHenry and Victoria Yeich, as well as Jessica Barney, Kelly Stanton and Laura Steffen.

“The team has won 24 straight matches between the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and all four team tournaments we have entered,” said Assistant Athletic Director and Head Coach Brian Rowan. “We are just as good if not better than we were at this time last year. Arguably, this is the best women’s tennis team in Gloucester County College’s history.”

Rowan attributes the Roadrunners’ success to a few factors, from an aggressive training schedule, to strategic recruitment. The players hit the tennis courts to practice five days a week for a minimum of two hours, which is in addition to their matches.

“Our team has a very strong lineup. The number six player can play first singles and hold her own,” said McHenry, team captain. “We all use to play in high school. We’ve become better players because there’s more competition at the college level.”

“We play because we want to. We don’t really focus on our record, so much as the match at hand,” said Yeich, co-captain. “We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t love the sport. I think that’s what makes us so successful.”

The NJCAA Region XIX championship tournament will take place at GCC on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13. For more information, call 856-415-2263 or email browan@gccnj.edu.
