Deptford Twp. – Gloucester County College students will vicariously travel “Around the World in 50 Minutes” based on the exploits of award-winning writer Marty Essen.

On Thursday, April 25 at 1 p.m., Essen will present his multi-media show rich with humorous stories and breathtaking photos. Students will adventure to all seven continents as he debunks animal and environmental myths and shares information on endangered species and bizarre creatures.

Swimming with piranhas, kayaking in the rainforest and rafting with humpback whales are a few of the experiences Essen will share. He has survived venomous insect stings, a poisonous snake bite, a hippo attack and an affront by wolves.

A native of Duluth, Minnesota, he started his career in 1990 as a music writer for Gig Magazine. Freelance opportunities to chronicle his trips to the Amazon rainforest and Australia inspired him to expand his travels and to pen Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents.

Essen has won numerous accolades for his work, including the Benjamin Franklin, National Indie Excellence and Best Books Book awards.

The “Around the World in 50 Minutes” presentation will take place at GCC in the Instructional Center, room 430. It is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Cheryl McBride, director of Student Life, at 856-415-2236.

GCC’s 250-acre campus is located at 1400 Tanyard Road in Deptford, right off Exit 56 of Route 55.
