Student Success Center : Placement Testing

Gloucester County College requires all newly-admitted students to take the college placement test. All first-time, full-time students are required to take the placement test after admission but prior to registering for classes. This exam is given to place students at current ability levels in reading, writing, and mathematics. Students are tested in reading and writing skills, mathematics/pre-algebra, and in elementary algebra.

Part-time students may delay taking the placement test until reaching the 12th credit, but there are several limitations on the part-time student who elects to postpone taking this exam. Part-time students may not elect any course in either college mathematics or college English before taking the placement test. In addition, at the 10th credit, part-time students are not permitted to take any course that has a reading prerequisite.

Exemptions from the placement test include: Students who have scored a 540 critical reading (verbal) and 530 math on their SATs; students who have earned a college degree; and students who have passed with a grade of C or better in a college-credit course in BOTH English and college mathematics. Students requesting exemption from the placement test must provide appropriate documentation to the Registrar. (Policy 8014)
