ACT (American College Test)
For the convenience of applicants to the Allied Health selective admission programs, GCC serves as an ACT residual test center. ACT residual tests provide more flexible deadlines for students registering to take the ACT. ACT residual test scores can only be used by the testing institution and cannot be sent to any other college. Applicants to selective admission programs are responsible for providing the Office of Enrollment Services with copies of their ACT residual score reports as outlined in the Nursing and Allied Health admission packets.
The residual and national ACT is administered by Gloucester County College throughout the year. For information about the exam, please contact the LRC Student Success Center at 856-415-2268 or 856-681-6249.

Basic Skills Assessment
Gloucester County College requires all newly-admitted students to take the college placement test. (Board policy 8014)
All first-time, full-time students are required to take the placement test after admission but prior to registering for classes. This exam is given to place students at current ability levels in reading, writing, and mathematics. Students are tested in reading and writing skills, mathematics/pre-algebra, and in elementary algebra.
Part-time students may delay taking the placement test until reaching the 12th credit, but there are several limitations on the part-time student who elects to postpone taking this exam. Part-time students may not elect any course in either college mathematics or college English before taking the placement test. In addition, at the 10th credit, part-time students are not permitted to take any course that has a reading prerequisite.
Exemptions from the placement test include: Students who have scored a 500* critical reading (verbal) and 530 math on their SATs; students who have earned a college degree; and students who have passed with a grade of “C” or better in a college-credit course in BOTH English and college mathematics. Students requesting exemption from the placement test must provide appropriate documentation to the Registrar.
* 540 as of Spring 2009 pending approval
Testing Arrangements for Students with Disabilities
Students with documented learning or physical disabilities which may prevent them from taking the placement test under standard conditions may request a specially scheduled administration of a test to meet their needs. Please contact the Office of Special Needs Services at 856-415-2265 for more information.
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Gloucester County College is an official test center for the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Students may accumulate college credit toward a degree by demonstrating knowledge gained independently in 34 different exam areas. The maximum number of credits which may be earned at GCC through CLEP is 16. Credits will be awarded only for courses which are applicable to the student’s program at GCC. CLEP tests are available by appointment at the LRC Student Success Center. Please call 856-415-2268 or 856-681- 6249. The CLEP Web site provides additional information at www.collegeboard.com/clep.
Placement Procedures
Criteria for evaluating a student’s academic skills are determined by the College’s placement test. If scores indicate a need for further development of fundamental academic skills, placement in developmental courses may be required until basic skills coursework is completed. Students receive a copy of their basic skills test scores and any placement requirements upon completion of their GCC placement tests.
Several levels of courses are provided in the Developmental Studies program. Courses include Basic Composition I, II, and III; Preparation for College Reading I, II, and III; Introductory College Mathematics; Introduction to College Studies, and Interpersonal Psychology. Elementary Algebra is a proficiency requirement for specific courses.
