Top Prospects from GCC Ready to Move On
July 13, 2009
Sophomore pitcher CJ Huyett was the latest in a line of Roadrunner baseball players to sign scholarship offers this week. Huyett has made the decision to accept a scholarship from Old Dominion University of the Colonial Athletic Assocation. The NCAA Division I school plays against the likes of University of North Carolina, University of Maryland, George Mason and teams from our area like Rutgers and University of Delaware. Huyett is expected to step in and contribute right away for the Monarchs.
Two members of the 2007 Washington Township HS baseball state championship team have also made commitments to continue their baseball and academic careers after enjoying success at Gloucester County College. Nate Young has committed to attend Salisbury University, a perennial division III powerhouse that finished 38-8 last season, and Bill Rice has committed to Div. II University of South Carolina at Aiken, which finished last season 42-19 in the very tough Peach Belt Athletic Conference.
Young was a 2009 Second Team NJCAA All-American this season for Gloucester County as the team posted a 36- 11 record. Young, a right handed pitcher, finished with a team low 1.78 era for the season. “I was a little shocked to be picked as an All-American, but it really made my day and made my parents very proud,” said Young. “I’m very glad I chose GCC for both academics and baseball. I graduated in two years and learned more about the game than I did anywhere else.”
Rice led the Roadrunners in hitting with a .383 batting average and a team high 12 home runs. Rice summed up his time at GCC, “It was great to play with talented guys who wanted to win and coaches who did a great job. The small campus helped me to focus and being around familiar faces like Nate (Young) and other guys from south jersey was a lot of fun.”
Both players were no doubt helped in their college search by the exposure that playing at GCC brought them. The nationally known program has won 5 national championships and an annual spring break trip south allows scouts from different areas to see the Roadrunners play.
