Roadrunners Finish 2nd at NJCAA District Championships

GCC's Ryan Kemmerer was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Wrestler

The GCC wrestling team traveled to Spartanburg, SC this weekend to compete in the NJCAA Eastern District Wrestling Tournament. The team finished second overall to defending national champions Nassau CC (NY). However, the Roadrunners 141 lb. Ryan Kemmerer was awarded the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler Award for winning his weight class and defeating Nassau’s Kodi Sylvestri who had been ranked #1 nationally in his weight class. GCC’s Kirk Kiriazis also won the 157 lb. title on Saturday.

All 10 of the Roadrunners wrestlers did well enough to qualify for the NJCAA National Championships to be held Feb. 25-27 in Des Moines, IA. Local wrestlers Ryan Layton (Clearview), Rick McIlvaine (Pitman) and Howard Graber (Woodstown) all had impressive showings at the District Tournament. Delsea’s Dan Walker was injured in the Roadrunners last dual match and was unable to compete.

Layton will be returning to the national tournament where he went 0-2 but will be looking to improve on that this year. “I feel much more confident with a year under my belt. I had close matches last year with the wrestler who took third and fifth and that was a learning experience. Now I will be looking to place and help the team place as well.”

Wrestling Prepares for District Championships

The Gloucester County College wrestling team will depart January 12th for the NJCAA Eastern District II Championships hosted by Spartansburg Methodist College. Wrestlers who advance through the district tournament qualify to compete in the NJCAA National Wrestling Tournament.
