GCC Earns 30-16 Victory over USMAPS

Being in the right position at the right time sometimes happens by chance, but knowing what to do when you get there is a combination of skill and hard work. For Gloucester County College freshman Eric Lasoski, it all came together tonight on the mat as he landed a lateral drop in the first period of his 197 lb. match and then held on for a 4-1 win that was part of a 30-16 team win over the US Military Academy Prep School. “When I saw I had my chance, I went for it,” said the Clearview graduate who compiled a 30-5 record as a senior in high school last season.

“Coach (Dan) Calhoun works us really hard in the room. He shows us what we need to improve but also wants us to focus on what we do well already.” Lasoski’s take down finished what was the most exciting flurry of the evening as the two 197 pounders squared off in the second to last match of the evening.

While the win is nice, Lasoski knows he needs to keep working hard. “College wrestling is a lot different than high school wrestling. The kids are a lot stronger and you never face a weak opponent so you need to be at your best at all times.” Lasoski and the Roadrunners will hit the road for the next couple of weeks before returning home for a showdown with Nassau CC on December 13th that will be a part of GCC’s winter sports open house. In addition to the wrestling match, there will also be a women’s/men’s basketball double header.
