Roadrunners Defeat Raritan Valley CC 2-0

The Roadrunners celebrate after freshman Matt Carrocino #17 scored to make it 2-0

Deptford, NJ

October 3, 2009

The Gloucester County men’s soccer team has been trying to put together 90 minutes of good soccer and did so today to defeat a tough team from Raritan Valley CC. The Roadrunners have led in three of their last four contests but have not been able to close out games. Today’s win helped GCC improve to 3-10 but may have helped most with confidence.

One of the key plays in the game came early as RVCC striker Ismail Bangura chipped a ball over GCC goalie Tim Lamoureax (Clayton, NJ/Clayton HS) but defender Steve Bergmann (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Regional HS) made a great hustle play to keep the ball out of the net with a sliding save. Bergmann was the hardest worker on the field all day and did an excellent job clearing balls and breaking up Raritan Valley scoring chances.

GCC then opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Rich Hershey (Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional HS) sent a ball into the box that Matt Maccarone (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Regional HS) one-touched over to Mike Rice (Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood HS). Rice firmly delivered his shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Both teams had chances to score in the second half but neither did until Bill Seddon (Salem, NJ/Salem HS) sent a long ball that led Matt Carrocino (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Regional HS) into a breakaway. Carrocino used a similar chip shot to the one Bangura from RVCC tried in the first half but his ball reached the back of the net to put the game away.

Tim Lamoureax and Matt Sullivan (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown HS) combined for the shutout in goal for the Roadrunners.
