In a battle of two top 5 teams in the latest ITA poll, #1 Oxford-Emory from Georgia came out on top with a 6-3 win over host #4 Gloucester County College. Oxford got off to a strong start by winning two of the doubles matches and then extended their lead in the singles to close out the contest. This was the first dual match that Oxford has played against another NJCAA DIII school. They will be traveling to Maryland over the weekend to compete in the Harford NIT Tournament where they will be favored to win.
The most competitive doubles match was at the third doubles position as GCC’s team of Horsfield and Hoffman led 4-3 before Oxford won 5 of the last six games to take the lead heading into singles play. During the match, Oxford’s Ethan Protas aggravated a pre-existing injury and was not able to compete in singles play.
In singles play Oxford’s Emilio Casillas solidied his position as the top rated player in DIII this season by knocking off GCC freshman Steve Suboleski 6-3, 6-2. Gloucester CC’s lone singles point came from sophomore John Horsfield’s win at 5th singles over Anwar Ferdinand.
Gloucester CC’s record fell to 6-3 on the season. This was their first loss against another NJCAA DIII school. Early in the day, it looked like the match would have to be cancelled due to heavy rains that blanketed the area but by 1pm the sun came out and with the help of wind, and work from the GCC team and staff made the courts playable for a great day of tennis.
