The Roadrunners stuck it out during the Region XIX Tournament on Saturday despite the wet conditions at Ocean County College. They beat Northampton in their first game of the day 2-0. The game was scoreless until the 7th inning when the Roadrunners rallied and scored 2 runs. Second baseman Lauren Kramme got a base hit up the middle to start the rally. Third basemen Heather Flynn bunted Kramme over to 2nd base to get her closer to scoring position. Northamtpon was unable to field the bunt leaving two runners in scoring position. A Northampton past ball advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd base. Shortstop Danielle DePasquale was up next and hit a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield scoring both Kramme and Flynn, giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage. Northamtpon was unable to respond in the bottom of the 7th inning.
The late rally in the 7th inning versus Northampton CC seemed to carry over to the second game versus Brookdale CC. Nichole Terreri lead off the first inning with a double to right field. Jill Mills followed with an RBI double followed by a Megan Becker RBI double giving the Roadrunners a 2-0 advantage. Unfortunately, Brookdale came out hungry in the 1st inning as well and scored 3 quick runs. They scored 2 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings as well giving them a 7-2 lead. The Roadrunners responded in the 5th inning scoring 4 runs brining them within 1 run, but were unable to put runners in scoring position in the 6th and 7th innings. GCC fell to Brookdale CC by a final score of 6-7.
Due to a rain delay, the Roadrunners will finish Regional competition on Wednesday, May 6. The first game will be played at 12:00pm versus Northampton CC. A win versus Northampton will mean that GCC will face Brookdale in the second game and will have to beat them twice to be crowned Region XIX Champions. Good luck Roadrunners!
