| GCC sophomore Andre Thompson finishing the Region XIX Championship meet in 1st Place |
November 1, 2009
As a freshman Andre Thompson competed in three sports at Gloucester County College and participated in two National Championship events. So when it came to this years NJCAA Region XIX Cross Country championship he was anything but nervous. "I've played multiple sports so I know what it takes to compete. I had no nerves during that race," reported Thompson. That composure helped him pull away in the final mile of the race for his first ever cross country win.
Thompson's win came at a great time for GCC. His efforts helped propel the team to the region championship. Thompson added, "Our team put in good work. We worked as a team all year, we had the home course advantage and we had a good game plan before the race."
In the next two weeks Thompson will look to keep improving as the team travels to the District championship and then the NJCAA National Cross Country Championship. When that is over, Thompson will turn his attention to wrestling during the winter months before he gets to his favorite sport of track and field in the spring. "Track is my favorite but it is great to win and be a champion for the first time." Look for more great moments from Andre as the seasons change.
UPDATE: On October 31st Andre added to his great season by capturing the District Championship in Westfield, Mass.
