Sophomore RHP Bob Applegate
(Sterling Regional HS) has signed his National
Letter of Intent to continue his baseball career
at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
Applegate was second in innings pitched for the
Roadrunners last season as he helped the team to a
Runner-Up finish at the NJCAA Division III World
Series in Tyler, TX. Applegate was 6-1 for the
year with a 3.83 era and he won the game that
helped the team advance to the finals at the World
Series.
Applegate credits the GCC
coaching staff for much of his improvement from high
school. “I was not ready for college baseball until
I came to GCC. In High School I just threw the ball
and when I came to GCC I learned the mental aspect
of the game and how to really pitch,” said the 6’3
Dean’s List student. Applegate is still looking to
improve and help the team this season, “I want to
gain strength and velocity.
I would like to have a more consistent
delivery.
I want to win a National Championship and
have the lowest team ERA in the country.”
Applegate, one of GCC’s top
student’s, looked for a Division I program that was
also a good fit academically. He joins a long list
of Roadrunners who have signed scholarship offers
after playing in the GCC program.
Applegate on UMBC – “It is the
right fight academically and athletically. It is an
up and coming school, it has a good professor to
student ratio and it is rated a Top School for the
cost. Athletically it is a Division I school and it
will allow me to play against the top competition
nationally.”
Coach Dickson on Applegate –
“Bobs work ethic is second to none. I expect Bob to
be a leader on and off the field.
He pitched and won his game last year in the
World Series. I expect him to help us get back to
the college world series.
I expect him to lead by example on the mound
and in the classroom.”
Coach Dickson on Applegate
going to UMBC – “I feel UMBC was a good fit for Bob.
He wanted to play Division I baseball and
earn a business degree from a good school.
He is getting both with his decision to
attend UMBC.”
