Roadrunners Win Sixth NJCAA Baseball National Championship

The Roadrunners celebrate their National Championship Win!

May 26, 2010 Tyler, TX

Congratulations to the Roadrunner Baseball team and coaching staff which won the NJCAA Division III Championship last night in dramatic fashion over the host school Tyler Junior College in Tyler, TX. The Roadrunners led 4-1 heading into the 7th inning but Tyler tied the score at 4-4 in the 7th and the score remained tied until Tournament MVP Logan Morello hit an RBI double in the top of the 10th inning to score Mark Malec. Mike Ney came in to pitch the bottom of the 10th inning and sealed the win just before 1am EST.

This is the 16th national championship for Gloucester County College, the sixth for the GCC baseball program, and the first for head coach and full-time faculty member Mike Dickson.
The game got off to a slow start as it was delayed for one hour due to thunderstorms in the Tyler area. When it did start GCC came out playing their best baseball. GCC sophomore SS JJ Williams singled and then was knocked in by sophomore C Jim Best in the top of the first innning to start the scoring. Then sophomore pitcher Frank Vitrano got the team off to a great start on the mound. Vitrano went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing only 2 earned runs to the #2 ranked team in the nation. The Roadrunners added a run in the top of the second innnig on a single by sophomore 3B Logan Morello that scored freshman 1B Dave Prager. Tyler answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning but the Roadrunners added two more runs of their own in the top of the fourth to go ahead 4-1 and things looked like they would go smoothly but the host school put up a great fight.

The bottom of the 7th inning was a momentum changer as the host Tyler Apaches scored 3 runs and tied the game as they headed to the final two innnings. Great pitching by GCC's sophomore Matt Smith and Tyler's Keaton Parsell kept both teams bats silent all the way until the top of the 10th inning when Morello's clutch hit sealed the win and the national championship for the Roadrunners.
