The Roadrunners improved to 7-8 overall with their 84-77 win over visiting Atlantic Cape CC (1-8). The Roadrunners have now won their last three games and are back in the race for a bid to the NJCAA Region XIX Tournament. In order to qualify, teams need at least a .500 record overall or in region play.
The Roadrunners led 48-29 at the half but have had trouble scoring in the second half of games and the trend continued last night. ACCC got to within two points at 72-70 before GCC was able to pull away at the end for a seven point win. The Roadrunners put four players in double figures - Kevin Booth 18, Greg Prince 16, Darnell McCargo 16, and Anthony Talley 12 - but the key stat may have been 14-16 foul shooting in the second half. Foul shooting has been an area where the Roadrunners have shown improvement.
ACCC showed a lot of determination to get back into the game in the second half. However, the all-around play of Darnell McCargo was too much down the stretch. McCargo had his best all-around effort of the season by adding 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals to his 16 point effort.
On Saturday the Roadrunners will travel to the #1 NJCAA Div. III ranked Bergen CC for a 3pm tipoff. Last season, Bergen CC reached the national championship game and they are currently undefeated. The Roadrunners will be looking to reach the .500 mark with a win and build some great momentum heading into the second half of the season.
