Friday December 2 Recap:
The two-time defending Roadrunner Classic champion Burlington CC Barons will square off against newcomers to the Classic Bergen CC on Saturday at 3pm in the championship game. The teams took different paths to the championship game but it should make for a very exciting game. In the first game on Friday night Burlington opened up a close game in the final fifteen minutes and collected a 79-59 win over Williamson Trade School. In the second game, Bergen CC narrowly escaped with a 49-46 win over the host Gloucester CC Roadrunners. Williamson will face GCC at 1pm in the consolation game of the Classic.

Top performances of day included a 21-point effort by 6'1 freshman guard Justin Swift of Williamson, an 18-point effort from Bergen's Zach Anderson, and Burlington putting four players in double figures in their win: 6'7 sophomore Dajuan Williams (15), Jarret Malone (16), Kevin Garris (16), and Jalen Armstead (12). For the host Roadrunners 6'3 sophomore Rob Anders scored 14 points and led the team in rebounds while 6'6 freshman Louis Guess continued his solid play and led the team with a 15-point effort.

Williamson Trade played a tough game and competed well vs. Burlington but the Barons stepped up at the end of the first half to open a ten point lead. Williamson scored the first basket of the second half but 3-point shots by Garris and then Marcel Northcut opened the game up and Burlington was able to pull away. The second game opened with GCC taking a 10-2 lead but two 3-point field goals in the first half by Maynard Freeman turned the momentum. The second half was a defensive struggle and the game was tied in the closing minutes. Two clutch free throws by 6'4 freshman Zach Anderson eventually sealed the win for the Bulldogs.

2011 Roadrunner Classic Preview: The 29th edition of the Classic should be a wide open affair this year with each team having a chance to compete for the championship. A balanced group includes defending champs Burlington CC, your GCC Roadrunners, and newcomers to the Roadrunner Classic Bergen CC and Williamson Trade School. Anything can happen in this prestigious early season tournament. The Tournament will tip-off with a 6:00pm matchup of Williamson Trade vs. defending champions Burlington CC followed by the Gloucester CC vs. Bergen CC matchup.

The Classic that began in 1981 has been won by Gloucester County College a total of 21 times. The Roadrunners, however, have not won the Classic since 2007. All games will be played at the Gloucester County College gymnasium.

Saturday December 4 Recap:

Congratulations to Burlington CC who captured their second consecutive Roadrunner Classic Championship on Saturday afternoon at Gloucester County College. The Barons scored a 62-57 win over Northampton CC. In the consolation game, Howard CC scored a 83-78 win over the host Roadrunners.

Championship Game Burlington CC 62 Northampton CC 57

The championship game of the Roadrunner Classic was a tightfisted affair that featured tough defense and a contrast of styles. For the second straight year the Barons of Burlington CC won the title by going to the basket and limiting their three point attempts. The Barons won the 2009 title without making a three point shot in the championship game and in this years championship game made only one three point shot. The Northampton CC offense featured the three point shot as they made 11 in the game including five by Al Blount. However, in this contest it was the slashing of BCC's JD Holloway that made the difference. Every time the Barons needed a basket Holloway was able to create for himself or a teammate earning him the MVP honors. Holloway finished with a team high 21 points.

Consolation Game Gloucester CC 78 Howard CC 83

The Roadrunners fell to 3-7 overall after this tough game with Howard CC. The Roadrunners had a very tough time controlling 6'5 Marques Jeter on the offensive end of the floor. Jeter finished the game with 18 points but scored 16 of those in the second half including two three point plays down the stretch of the game. The Roadrunners tried to make a game of it down the stretch as they made their best run with 5:00 to go in the game. Trailing 76-69 freshman Larone Lashley drove to basket and drew a foul. After hitting both shots GCC got a stop on the defensive end and PG Derrick Murray found Isiah Dixon under the basket for an easy score. Moments later Murray made a steal and drove the length of the floor for a layup cutting the lead to one point. After a timeout, Howard CC (3-4) was able to score on a putback basket by Donnell Parker and then got a three point play by Jeter to stop the run and put the game away. Sophomore Maurice Clark had his best game as a Roadrunner, scoring 14 points including two 3-point shots.

Friday December 3 Recap:

The Barons of Burlington County College will have a chance to repeat as champions of the Roadrunner Classic on Saturday as they will face Northampton CC in the Championship Game at 3:00pm. Burlington defeated a tough Howard CC team 71-66 in the opening on Friday night. The host Roadrunners of Gloucester CC fought hard as well and battled to the end but fell 83-74 to Northampton CC. More details and photos posted below from both games...

Game #1

Burlington County College                     71

Howard Community College                  66

Burlington County College (3-4) advanced to the Championship Game of the 2010 GCC Roadrunner Holiday Basketball Classic with a stirring 71-66 victory over Howard Community College (2-4).  Burlington placed four players in double figures led by J.D. Holloway  15, Eric Pearson 13, Rumeall Strother 13, and Abner Sandoval with 10.  Marques Jeter led Howard with a game high of 19 points. Howard played well throughout the contest and looks to be an excellent addition to the tournament this year.

The key play of the game came with Burlington holding a slim 52-48 lead when a foul was called in the backcourt.  A resulting technical foul on the Howard bench gave Burlington’s J.D. Holloway two foul shots and Abner Sandoval two foul shots.  Burlington hit all four foul shots to stretch their lead to 56-48, a lead they never relinquished.

Game 2:

In game two of the Roadrunner Classic the host Roadrunners took on Northampton CC. The game was tied at 37 apiece with just over three minutes to go in the first half when Northampton went on a 13-0 run to close out the half. Northampton played their best basketball of the night during that stretch and it made the difference in the game.

Freshman Larone Lashley hit 3 three point shots in the first half to keep the Roadrunners in close but NCC's sophomore guard Josh Vargas was the best player on the floor tonight. He scored 18 first half points including a 30 footer at the buzzer to open the 13 point lead. Vargas went on to finish with 25 points and also set his teammates up for some easy scores late in the game to hold off severall GCC comeback attempts.

The closest the Roadrunners got in the second half was to cut the lead to six points but each time the Spartans from NCC were able to respond. When GCC's Derrick Murray took the ball the length of the floor to score and cut the lead to 8 points with 6:00 minutes to go NCC responded with a length of the courts pass to Ralph Padilla for a score on the other end. When GCC's Isiah Dixon stepped outside to hit a three point shot and cut the lead to 7 points NCC responded by crashing the glass and Isaac Robinson scoring on a putback basket.

2009 Recap:

The 2009 Roadrunner Classic Champions - Burlington County College

The Barons came from behind in both games to claim their first ever Classic title. They attempted only one three point shot in the championship game and used the strong inside play of 6'5 Rashon Bellinger, 6'5 Leland Tate and 6'6 Dominique Conner to claim the title.

The Barons came into the tournament with an 0-4 record and were thought to have very little chance of claiming the title.

The Barons are an NJCAA Division II program and members of the Garden State Athletic Conference and Region XIX
