Basketball Faces Passaic CCC in Doubleheader
December 15, 2011 Deptford, NJ
On Tuesday night the
Roadrunners hosted Passaic CCC in a basketball
doubleheader. In the first game Gloucester County
College's Women's Team sprinted out of the starting
gate, bolting to a 43 to 21 halftime lead, and went on
to defeat Passaic County Community College 74-55.
The Roadrunners improved their overall record to 8-4
and their Region XIX record to 5-3. Lavon
Childress scored 18 of her game high 24 points in the
first half to lead the Roadrunners. Ta'Shay
March added 16 points, Liz Faulkner 9, Shaneen Datts
8, Chanel Wall 8, Brianna Aversa 6, Lyndsay Valentine
2, and Stephanie Longley 2 to comlete the scoring for
GCC. Coby Johnson paced the scoring for Passaic
with 21 points.
In the second game of the night,
the men’s basketball team got an inspired effort from
their inside players tonight as sophomore Rob Anders led
the way and got a lot of help from freshmen Louis Guess
and Gardell Anderson. The three inside players crashed
the boards all night and were able to finish a lot of
their opportunities around the basket.
Anders finished
the game with a team high 15 points and led the team in
rebounding. Guess added 10 points and Anderson made some
great hustle plays and scored 8 points. Anderson has
given the team a lift since returning from injury last
week and has improved in each outing.
The Roadrunners led 42-28 at
halftime and led by as many as 20 points in the second
half. Passaic CCC made a run around the 6:00 minute mark
and cut the lead to 10 points behind a sensational
effort from Kory Fisher (27 points). GCC was able to
stop that run but then Fisher and Co. got some turnover
and Passaic cut lead to 70-66 with 1:00 minute to go.
GCC threw a long inbounds pass ahead to Anders but he
missed a tough layup. The ball was rebounded by Anderson
who drew a foul. Anderson made the first but missed the
second and Passaic scored with :30 to go down only
71-68. Chris Mims ran the clock down and then drew a
foul with 11 seconds to go. Mims made both his FT’s to
seal the win.
GCC moves to 4-10 overall but in
Region 19 play there are only 4-5 and have plenty of
time to improve that record.
Both teams will travel to Sussex CC on Saturday for
a doubleheader.
