Roadrunner Softball Off to a 18-4 Start to Season
March 23, 2014 Deptford, NJ

The Roadrunner Softball team took three out of four games in their weekend homestand including a sweep of their opening Region 19 doubleheader. The team split games on Saturday against Orange CC and then swept Sussex CC. Sunday's doubleheader also marked our first live NJCAATV broadcast from our Softball Facility.

In Game 1 against Orange CC, sophomore Melissa Mackey pitched a complete game one-hitter and struck out five batters. Taylor Rizzotte, Mackey and Ashley Otting each had two hits and Ottings hits included a three RBI triple. The game ended after five innings with a 17-0 Roadrunner win. Game 2 was a different story as the Roadrunners spotted Orange CC four runs in the top of first inning. GCC mounted a late comeback but two great defensive plays by Orange ended the game with a 5-4 loss. Ashley Connor pitched well but took the loss.

Sunday the Roadrunners came back strong against visiting Sussex CC. These games were originally scheduled to be played at Sussex CC but due to field conditions were moved here. Game 1 was highlighted by a 7-hit, 6-run fifth inning that broke the game open and ended it early. Searra Priolo drilled a two RBI triple to the fence in left centerfield as part of that inning. Melissa Mackey went a complete game on the mound with 7 strikeouts. Mackey added three hits. Erin Kirkbride had 2 hits. Summer Wenzel batted in the game-ending run. The Roadrunners seemed to get stronger as the day went on. In Game 2 Priolo tripled again, Taylor Rizzotte scored three times and the Roadrunners came away with a 10-1 win. Mackey recorded her second win allowing just four hits and striking out seven more batters. The Roadrunners did not committ an error in field all day in support of Mackey.

Sunday's doubleheader marked the debut of our live broadcasting schedule of GCC Softball on NJCAATV. Both games were broadcast live but can also be viewed at any time at www.njcaatv.com/gccroadrunners.

The Roadrunners are now 4-1 at home and 2-0 in Region 19 play. The team will be on the road this week on Tuesday and Thursday before returning home for a doubleheader Saturday against Lehigh-Carbon CC.
