May 17-19, 2012 Rochester, MN
Gloucester County College captured its second consecutive NJCAA Division III National Championship on Saturday in Rochester, MN with a 1-0 win over Anne Arundel CC (MD). The Roadrunners were led by Tournament MVP Kristina Morgan who pitched the complete game win. Sophomores Brianna Molino, Justine Mattia and freshman Brittany Fitzmaurice joined Morgan on the All-Tournament Team. Molino was also named the Outstanding Offensive Player of the Tournament and Head Coach Steve DePasquale was named Coach of the Year.
The Roadrunners played tough throughout the tournament and won several close games on the way to the championship. Game 1 was a 6-0 defeat of Duchess CC but the next few games were much tighter contests. In their second game GCC secured a 5-3 win Herkimer CC and in the semifinal a 2-1 win over Tompkins-Cortland CC. Those wins set the stage for the championship game vs. Anne Arundel and star pitcher Elaine Nescio. Anne Arundel had already suffered one defeat in the tournament so would need to defeat GCC twice to win the double elimination format. GCC would need only one game to claim the title though.
It was not until the fourth inning that GCC broke open the tie game and scored the game's only run. Brianna Molino started with a double and then was bunted over to third base by C Brittany Fitzmaurice. Freshman Michelle Panasiti then hit a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Molino. That was all the support Morgan needed as she pitched a 4-hit game and struck out two of the game's final three batters. For the second year in a row she was on the mound for the Roadrunners for the final outs of the championship game.
