Lincroft, NJ
It was a big weekend for the women’s athletic programs at GCC. First the women’s cross country team won the Region XIX Championship and then the women’s tennis team matched that feat in their Region XIX Championships hosted by Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ. The Roadrunners tallied 11 points which was enough to clinch the title ahead of Mercer CC. The team has previously captured region titles in 2006 and 2002. The team will now begin preparations for the NJCAA National Tournament which will be held in Tucson, AZ on May 2-7th.
Individual winners for GCC were Sara Wilkins (Williamstown HS) at 3rd singles, Ali Crozier (Delsea HS) at 5th singles, Alyssa Arabia (Washington Twp HS) at 6th singles and the team of Crozier and Sade Van Wijk (Rietveld Lyceum/Holland) at 3rd doubles.
The women’s tennis program is now on the upswing as five of the six singles players from this season are freshman and will be back in 2009. The team also captured the Garden State Athletic Conference regular season championship this season as part of their 7-3 campaign and won the Harford National Invitation Tournament held in Bel Aire, Maryland on September 12-15. The team is coached by Lauren Morgan and GCC Assistant Athletic Director Brian Rowan.
