Freshman Amanda Chandler hits a serve during the Roadrunners 9-0 win |
September 8, 2009 Deptford, NJ
The GCC women's tennis team finally got to play a match that counted on Tuesday and made the most of it. The Roadrunners opened the season with a 9-0 victory over visiting Cecil CC. The team has been practicing just shy of a month now and while there were some early jitters everyone played well.
The Roadrunners return several players from last seasons Region XIX championship team and will try their best to repeat this season. The team will be helped by freshman recruit Christina Bell (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East HS) who won her matches today at both first doubles and first singles convincingly. Another freshman, Amanda Chandler (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford HS) came through in the toughest match of the day winning a third set tiebreaker to defeat Cara Wilson at fifth singles.
The Roadrunners will face a tough test on Wednesday (weather permitting) as they will host a talented team from Harford CC (MD). The Hawks defeated the Roadrunners twice last season. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30pm.
