The 2011 GCC Women's Tennis Team
withe the Runner Up Trophy in Tucson, AZ

Tucson, AZ
The GCC Women’s Tennis Team
did not go to Tucson with huge expectations but
the team competed hard and played some of their
best tennis in important matches and secured a 2nd
place finish, the highest for a GCC Women’s Team.
Oxford College (MS) took home the overall team
title with 27 total points and GCC finished one
point ahead of rival Brookdale CC for second place
with 21 total points. #6 Singles Amanda Chandler
(West Deptford) got the day started for GCC with
her win, earning her All-American status at that
flight, but GCC lost their other two final round
singles matches.
Going into the final three
doubles championship matches GCC was tied with
Brookdale CC at 20 points apiece. Brookdale was
competing at the #1 and #2 doubles positions against
Oxford while GCC was competing at the #3 doubles
championship also against Oxford. Things fell right
for the Roadrunners as Oxford won the first two
flight doubles matches in straight sets. That set
the stage for the tournament’s most compelling match
as the GCC team of Joanna O’Donnell (Pitman) and
Kirsten Buscher (Gateway) went the distance for a
three set win and the team point that put GCC into
second place. After leading 4-1 in the first set the
Roadunners dropped the set 6-4 and it looked as if
momentum had shifted to Oxford. The freshman tandem
battled back though and played great tennis in the
second set winning 6-1. The Roadrunners then led 5-4
in the third and again 6-5 in the third but could
not close out the match and it went into at
tiebreaker. A winner by Buscher and two excellent
serves by O’Donnell got the team off to a 3-0 start
and when Buscher hit her final overhead winner of
the match to win the tiebreaker 7-1 the team swamped
the girls on the court and let them know the win had
pushed them ahead of Brookdale.
In addition to winning the
Individual National Championship at their flights,
Chandler - #6 Singles, and O’Donnell/Buscher – 3rd
Doubles, all three were named 1st Team
All-Americans at those positions.
Each member of the GCC team
(Justine Stahl – Williamstown, Courtney Addis –
Williamstown, Kelly Bates – Pitman, Avery Forte –
Pitman, O’Donnell, Buscher, Chandler) scored points
for the team during the three day event held at the
Refkin Tennis Center in Tucson, AZ. The team will be
returning to GCC on Thursday afternoon.
