GED & ESL ServicesEnglish as a Second Language

English as a Second Language classes are available for adults who want to learn and adapt themselves to the American language and culture. Special emphasis is placed on improving communication skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Registration

A placement test is required for all adult education classes. The GCC staff will evaluate your skills and help you register for the class that is right for you. No mail-in registration is accepted for Adult Basic Education (ABE), Basic Skills, GED, or the English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. Students may come in person to register. The $10 nonrefundable registration fee must be paid with check, money order or credit card at the time of registration.

*Anyone who is 16-21 years old must complete a certificate of non-enrollment form. The certificate is available at your local high school.

What are the times of the program?

Day:
Monday and Wednesday 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 am-12:00 pm

Evening:
Tuesday & Thursday, 6-9 pm

Where are the classes?

Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT), Gloucester County College (GCC), Gloucester County Library Swedesboro and Williamstown Middle School.

When do classes start?

We offer start dates each month.

How much is the program?

The program is free although there is a $10 nonrefundable registration fee.

What level do I start at?

An assessment will be given to you to determine proper level placement.

I have my diploma.  Can I just come to brush up before taking the college entrance exam?

Yes. You will be given a complete testing assessment in all areas and we will help you brush up on those areas that you need for the placement test.

How long do I stay in the program?

During the day we offer 10 week modules. Everyone’s needs are different. You are free to stay in the program for as long as it takes to reach your goal.

Do I have to go to every class session?

You are required to attend every session during the first two weeks of the program to complete testing and orientation. After the second week, the staff will work closely with you to develop a schedule. 

How do I register?

You may register in person.  We are located in the Continuing Education Building.
