The cost of attendance (COA) is an estimate of the combined costs of direct and indirect educational expenses.  It takes into account your basic living expenses, such as:  housing, transportation, etc. It is important for you to budget and make wise decisions regarding how to utilize the financial aid funds you receive.  Students are not allowed to receive aid that exceeds their cost of attendance.

CALCULATING AWARD PACKAGES

Financial aid awards are based on your financial need. Financial Need is calculated by subtracting your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from your Estimated Cost of Attendance.  The amount of financial aid awarded to you may not cover your total financial need.

An Expected Family Contribution is a value calculated by The Department of Education, used to determine a student’s eligibility for federal student aid. This number results from the financial information the student provided on his or her Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  EFC’s are listed on the Student Aid Report (SAR) sent to students by the federal processor after they have filed the FAFSA.

Example of Financial Need
Cost of Attendance (COA) $17,798

*From student’s SAR
