links GCC & LINKS Art Show Opening

Location:  Dr. Ross Beitzel Art GalleryGloucester County College and LINKS, Inc. will launch the observance of African-American History Month with a two-hour reception in the College Center’s Dr. Ross Beitzel Art Gallery. LINKS, Inc., an organization of African-American business, educational, professional, and governmental leaders, is co-sponsoring the open house.

The art show, which runs from January 29 until March 4, will feature the quilts, paintings and photographs of regional and local artists. Artists exhibiting their work include Kathleen Lindsey, Michele Lucas, Vusumuzi Maduna, Ruby Peters, Joan Wallace Reeves, Sandra Peterson-Giles, Vincent Wilson and Walter Cade III, and Luther Alridge aka Obrafo.

This is a live concert multimedia presentation dedicated to an American Legend, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Relive the most memorable events in Dr. King’s life as the Nobel Peace Prize recipient that led African Americans in the struggle for social change and racial equality for all people.  This is a wonderful innovative and powerful performance that will move to you clap, sing and join in on the presentation. 


underground railroad lecture Underground Railroad Lecture presented by Naomi Nelson

What was the Underground Railroad?  Discover the Underground Railroad through code words, hiding places - including sites in South Jersey, historic figures and escape routes from slavery to freedom.  A screening of The North Star will introduce you to Harriett Tubman on her journey to freedom, Eliza's daring escape, and freedom hero John Parker in "Save Us John Parker.  Audience discussion is invited.  Join this introduction to the Underground Railroad presented by Naomi Nelson, former Vice President of Programs at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and current Administrator, Grants and Special Projects at Gloucester County College. 


dion jordan “It's not about a Race, it’s about a Journey” presented by Guest Speaker Dion Jordon

This Presentation seeks to educate students and communities about African American heritage, promote diversity, inclusion and a common understanding across all cultures and enhance social and leadership development among all participants.  This lecture focuses not just on race but on the journey that all people share in making our communities and colleges a better place.

Second lecture presented by Dion Jordon - The Power of Diversity in Leadership
Time:  Immediately following the 12:00 noon lecture

In this presentation Dion demonstrates the value of embracing diversity in leadership.  With eye opening exercises students will learn powerful insights and techniques to be effective leaders and communicators.  Students will walk away with tools to help, resolve conflicts, make decisions to reach team goals as well as enhance individual’s strengths and unique abilities.


African-American Cultural Celebration with Namorah Byrd and Ollievita Williams
Date: Thursday, February 17

Location: Student Life Mini-Center
               
Professor Namorah Byrd is a professional storyteller and spoken word poet.  She and her students will be emphasizing African-American spoken word traditions through poetry, prose, speeches, video clips, songs, and music.  Dr. Ollievita Williams will conduct a discussion on research procedures for tracing and documenting one's ancestry, using resources such as the National Archives, federal and local census data, historical documents, and Ancestry.com.  Audience members will be invited to join in on the conversation. When you come to the event, bring a favorite African American authored poem to share, family photo to show, or family story to tell.    

The A.R.T. (Audience Response Trivia) Game Show
Date:  Thursday, February 24
Time:  11:00 am – 1:00 pm
Location:  Cafeteria

This is an event that shouldn’t be missed – a Black History Month Trivia Game Show with topics such as Movies, Music, TV and History.  Come on out and join in on the fun! Contestants can win cash and prizes!
