Women Enabling Women
The goal of Women Enabling Women is to encourage, enlighten and empower women attending Gloucester County College and to provide community service to women and their children in Gloucester and Camden counties.
Donations
The shelters provide emergency and transitional housing for homeless women with children, women of domestic violence, and substance abusers.
Tonight, 100,000 children will sleep in a shelter, abandoned building, or on the violent streets of this country. Nearly 500,000 families comprising of one million children will remain homeless this year in the United States. What is even equally distressing is that 120,000 of the families requesting emergency shelter will be turned away. And statistics reveal that 90% of these homeless families are headed by women who in almost every case have been physically and/or sexually abused. Tragically enough, almost 70% of them had been abused by the age of 12.
When faced with homelessness, children are at great risk for abuse which causes severe disruption during their childhood that often prevents them from obtaining adequate levels of education and training. And homeless women who have been victimized will face significant barriers to employment. Without appropriate support services, the emotional consequences of abuse, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression, will interfere with women’s efforts to work.
We would greatly appreciate your assistance with our community service event by donating any new or gently used clothing.
