Placement Test FAQsWhat is the Placement Test?
Gloucester County College requires all newly-admitted students to take the college Placement Test. All first-time, full-time students are required to take the Placement Test after admission but prior to registering for classes. This exam is given to place students at current ability levels in reading, writing, and mathematics. Students are tested in reading and writing skills, mathematics/pre-algebra, and in elementary algebra.

Can I be exempt from taking the Placement Test?
Exemptions from the Placement Test include:

  • Effective April 2, 2012 students who have achieved the following test scores qualify for an exemption from that portion of the placement test. Please provide the admissions office with a copy of the following test scores for tests taken after April 1995:

    • SAT: 500 Critical Reading and/or  500 Math
    • OR PSAT: 50 Critical Reading and/or 50 Math
    • OR ACT Composite: 21
  • Students who have earned a college degree
  • Students who have passed with a grade of C or better in a college-credit course in English and/or college mathematics.

Students requesting exemption from the placement test must provide appropriate documentation to the Registrar (Admissions Office). You may contact the Admissions Office at 856-415-2209 if you have questions about exemptions.

If I place in a basic skill course or courses as indicated by my results can I retake the test?
Once a student has taken the Placement Test, the student has the right to challenge (retest) any or all parts of the test (for a fee). However, the student can challenge each part of the test only one time.
