GCC requires every student to take a placement test to assess current skill levels in reading, writing and mathematics. All freshmen are placed in classes based on their placement test results. Results of the writing, math and reading components of the test determine placement in either college-level or developmental courses.

GCC also offers an array of developmental (basic skills) courses to satisfy any requirements that result from the test.

Exemptions from the placement test include:

  • Students who have taken the PSAT, SAT or ACT after April 1995 and have scored:
    • SAT:  500 Critical Reading and/or 500 MathOR
    • PSAT:  50 Critical Reading and/or 50 MathOR
    • ACT Composite:  21
  • Students who have passed with a grade of “C” or better in course(s) from a regionally accredited college in English composition and/or college-level math.
  • Students who have earned a college degree, and completed a college-level English and math course with a “C” or better.

Students requesting exemption from the placement test must provide appropriate documentation to the Office of Admissions. The basic skills placement test is administered in the Testing Center, 856.415.2268 or 856.681.6249.
