Academic Learning Communities Overview
Beginning in fall 2009, GCC will introduce seven academic learning communities (biology, communications, education, English, history, mathematics and psychology) which will provide students earning an associate degree with an easier and less stressful way to plan for the future. Pre-scheduled “block” classes will guarantee the correct courses are taken at the proper times. Similar to the Teachers 2000 (T2K) program, students in the same learning community will complete their studies together.
“Learning communities break down the walls that surround individual, isolated courses and provide teachers and students with a support system,” said Charles Harkins, acting dean of arts and sciences. “Learning communities have an extraordinary impact on retention and success rates throughout the country.”
