The Gloucester County College Educational Campus Safety and Security Department is a proprietary system comprised of 18 full and part time personnel who patrol both the Gloucester County College and Gloucester County Institute of Technology campuses. The dedicated men and women of GCEC’s Safety and Security Department are responsible for enhancing the quality of life, safety and security of the college community. To fulfill this mission, security officers patrol campus buildings and grounds to insure public welfare. The number of officers on duty varies according to the time of day and expected level of activity. All officers are trained to assist the community in situations ranging from emergency response to general advice on crime prevention.

All members of the Safety and Security Department participate in annual in-service training programs, covering a variety of different subjects. Training includes updating each officer's cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificates, first aid, use of the AED, conflict and crisis resolution, patrol procedures, and fire safety skills.

GCEC security officers conduct foot and vehicular campus patrols, assist in monitoring building access and activity, enforce college rules and regulations, issue parking tickets, respond to fire alarms, card access door alarms, and intrusion alarms. Security also provides many routine services to the campus community, including the unlocking of rooms for authorized members of the student body, faculty, or staff, and an escort program. In addition to patrolling buildings and campus grounds, officers remain responsible for the registration of motor vehicles, enforcing parking regulations, maintaining a lost and found department, investigating accidents and complaints, and providing assistance to sick or injured students.

The Campus Security Office hours run Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 11p.m. The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department aids campus security, providing a fleet of officers to maintain the campus 24 hours a day, seven days per week. Each officer must conduct foot and mobile patrols, enforce traffic regulations, investigate criminal acts, and respond to any crisis or medical emergency.

A major component of the Safety and Security Department's work is educating the campus community on security concerns and enforcing college policies. The department works with Deptford Township Police and the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Departments as necessary to respond to possible violations of local or state laws. Significant criminal incidents and suspicious activity are reported to the Deptford Police as they occur.

Similarly, criminal events happening in the area that impact the college community are transmitted to the Safety and Security Department. GCEC security officers neither carry weapons nor have arrest powers, but work with the police when an arrest is warranted. The use or possession of any firearm, dangerous weapon, device or any component or appearance of a dangerous weapon is not permitted on campus.

The GCEC Safety and Security Department accomplishes its mission through delivering a comprehensive and integrated safety and security program, in partnership with the community served. The security program works in collaboration with various safety and security partners, ranging from the Deptford Township Police and Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services, Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department, to other county, state and federal agencies.
