Gloucester County College provides educational opportunity to all students. The College will review each prospective student’s education records and achievements upon application. Admission interviews are not required but are available to help evaluate the application for admission and assist students in selecting programs best suited to their abilities and interests.
Admission to the College
Admission to Gloucester County College is available to applicants who have graduated from a recognized high school, completed a secondary school education in a home school setting, earned a secondary school completion credential, or demonstrated an ability to benefit.
Applications of non-high school graduates will be evaluated using the College’s placement examination as an indicator of their ability to benefit. All non-high school graduates will be advised on the benefit of achieving the equivalency diploma.
Eligible students who have completed their junior year of high school, or younger students with exceptional academic ability and appropriate approval, may enroll in college-level courses through any of the College’s articulation agreements with local high schools. These programs include, but are not limited to: Dual Credit, Tech Prep, and High School Options Program (HSOP). Successful completion of the course(s) allows students to apply credits toward a GCC degree or certificate and/or transfer the credits to another institution.
Admission to the College does not guarantee rights to financial aid. The College will adhere to all federal and state statutes which relate to awarding financial aid. (Policy 8015)
Application Procedures
Full-time Applicants
A full-time student is one who takes 12 or more credits during a semester.
To apply for admission, students must submit an admission application. A $20 nonrefundable, lifetime application fee will be assessed during the first semester of registration.
Applicants must also submit an official high school transcript showing graduation or anticipated graduation or a copy of their GED and scores. First-time students will be required to take a placement test prior to registration. For exemptions to the placement test, see “Basic Skills Assessment” on page 10 of the catalog. Applicants who wish to earn their GED should contact the GCC Office of Continuing Education at 856-415-2217 or 415-2218.
Part-time Applicants
A part-time student is one who takes fewer than 12 credits during a semester.
New part-time students must submit an application, and an official high school transcript or GED for admission. A $20 nonrefundable, lifetime application fee will be assessed during the first semester of registration. Part-time students are encouraged to declare a major upon application, but may begin studies with undeclared majors. They may remain undeclared until registering for the 12th credit, at which time they must declare a major. Students with undeclared majors are considered non-matriculated and are not eligible for financial aid. Part-time students must take a placement test prior to reaching the 12th credit, and will be placed according to the test results.
Part-time students wishing to register for any 100-level (also called college-level) mathematics or English courses must take the placement test prior to registration for those classes. If the placement test has not been taken upon registration for the 10th credit, part-time students will not be permitted to enroll in any course which has reading as a prerequisite. For exemptions to the placement test, see “Basic Skills Assessment” on page 10 of the catalog.
Bring or mail all application materials to: Office of Enrollment Services, Gloucester County College, 1400 Tanyard Road, Sewell, NJ 08080. An application is available online at www.gccnj.edu, in print at the Admission counter in the Student Services Building, or by contacting the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209 and one will be mailed upon your request.
Returning Students
Returning students are those who previously attended GCC but have not been in attendance for one or more semesters. Students whose last date of attendance was prior to 2001 must complete a new admission application. A $20 nonrefundable, lifetime application fee will be assessed during the first semester of registration.
In addition, students who applied to GCC but never attended must reapply for admission if it has been three or more years since the date of their last application.
Returning students who have not yet satisfied the placement testing requirement should call 856-415-2268 or 856-681-6249.
Home-Schooled Students
GCC recognizes the value of home schooling and welcomes home-schooled students to enroll in full- or part-time studies. Home-schooled students must follow the same steps for general admission as high school graduates, including completion of the College’s basic skills placement test. In addition, home-schooled students must submit documentation of their academic work in transcript form, if available. In lieu of a formal transcript, a signed letter will be accepted from the primary instructor, verifying that the student has successfully completed the equivalent of a high school education.
Home-schooled students applying to selective admission programs will be required to submit formal documentation to verify completion of course and testing prerequisites. For more information, contact the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209.
Transfer Students
Students who attended other colleges or universities before GCC are considered transfer students. Transfer students must follow the same application procedures as first-time college students. Because of its open admission policy, GCC does not require transfer students applying for general admission to submit official copies of college transcripts as a condition of acceptance. Transfer students applying to selective admission programs are required to submit official college transcripts.
Transfer students in any program who wish to have their previously-earned college credit applied toward their GCC degree or certificate must do so by following the transfer credit procedure outlined below.
Transfer students must satisfy the placement testing requirement or provide proof of exemption. Please call the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209 for more information.
Transfer Credit
A student transferring from another accredited institution may transfer credit in which a grade of “C” or better was received. Grades from such courses are not included in the GCC cumulative Grade Point Average. Transfer credit evaluations are available only to students attending the current semester at GCC.
Transfer applicants must complete the “Request for Transfer of College Credits” form, available from the Admissions Office, and submit it after all official college transcripts to be evaluated have been received. It is the transfer student’s responsibility to request all official transcripts and have them forwarded to the GCC Admissions Office.
Transfer credits are awarded based on the transfer evaluator’s findings. Students are notified by mail of the evaluation results.
Prospective students may request an unofficial evaluation of college credits by contacting the GCC Admissions Office. No transfer of credits will occur, however, until an official transfer credit evaluation is complete.
Matriculation
A matriculated student is one who is working toward a degree or certificate. Students are classified as “matriculated” when they have been officially accepted to the college, are enrolled full- or part-time, and have indicated a program of study they intend to pursue. All students must matriculate before registering for their 12th credit. Students without a declared program of study are not eligible for financial aid.
Applicants to GCC who do not have a high school diploma or GED may be accepted as matriculating students on a full- or part-time basis under the 30-Credit Plan. This program allows students to earn up to 30 college credits at GCC while preparing to take the GED. They must have earned their high school equivalency diploma in order to continue their enrollment past 30 credits. Information on the 30-Credit Plan is available by calling the Office of Enrollment Services at 856-415-2209.
General Acceptance Procedures
GCC notifies applicants concerning their acceptance after receiving an application and all required supporting documentation. Within two weeks of notification of acceptance, students should submit a $50 non-refundable tuition deposit made payable to Gloucester County College to reserve their space in classes.
Selective Admissions
Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, and Ford ASSET Automotive Technology are selective admission programs. Acceptance to these programs is competitive. Applicants must obtain an admission packet for their program in addition to the College’s standard application materials.
Selective admission programs have a two-tiered application requirement. Applicants must complete the general admission process outlined above. In addition, candidates must complete the application process for their program as outlined in the admission packet specific to the program of interest. The admission packets specify requirements that must be fulfilled to apply to a selective admission program. The admission packets for the next academic year are available annually by mid-summer. Applicants must be certain they use the packet for the year they wish to apply. During the periods when admission packets are not available, prospective applicants may obtain a list of prerequisites by contacting the Office of Enrollment Services. All materials may be picked up in person at the Information Center in the Student Services Building.
ACT (American College Test)
For the convenience of applicants to the Nursing and Allied Health selective admission programs, GCC serves as an ACT residual test center. ACT residual tests provide more flexible deadlines for students registering to take the ACT. ACT residual test scores can only be used by the testing institution and cannot be sent to any other college. Applicants to selective admission programs are responsible for providing the Office of Enrollment Services with copies of their ACT residual score reports as outlined in the Nursing and Allied Health admission packets.
The residual and national ACT is administered by Gloucester County College throughout the year. For information about the exam, please contact the LRC/ Student Success Center at 856-415-2268 or 856-681-6249.
HESI Admission Assessment Exam
GCC serves as a test site for the HESI Admission Assessment Exam for applicants to the Nursing program. Only tests taken at GCC will be accepted for admission to the GCC Nursing program. Students are responsible for providing the Office of Enrollment Services with an official copy of their HESI Admission Assessment scores as outlined in the GCC Nursing Admission Packet.
The HESI Admission Assessment Exam is administered in the GCC Learning Resource Center where arrangements to take the HESI Admission Assessment can be made. The HESI Admission Assessment Cumulative Score Report will be available to each applicant upon completion of the exam. For more information about taking the HESI Admission Assessment, contact the LRC/ Student Success Center at 856-415-2268, 856-415-2248, or 856-681-6249.

GCC no longer requires the NET for application to the Nursing program. GCC remains a NET test site for applicants to other Nursing programs.
The Nurse Entrance Test is administered in the GCC LRC/Student Success Center. Arrangements to take the NET are made through the LRC/Student Success Center. Results are available to the applicant upon completion of the test. For more information about taking the NET, contact the LRC/Student Success Center at 856-415-2268 or 856-681-6249.
